Bongos Ikwue was born on June 6, 1942, in Oturkpo, Benue State, Nigeria. His musical journey began in his youth at Okene Comprehensive Secondary School, where he formed his first band, the Cubana Boys. While attending St. Paul’s Secondary School in Zaria, he was nicknamed “Forge” by his peers for his habit of writing and singing original songs. His passion for music continued at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), where he formed the UniBello Brothers and later founded Bongos & The Groovies in 1967. His musical style is a distinctive fusion of Afrobeat, highlife, folk, jazz, soul, and blues, often featuring lyrics that address social issues, love, and unity.
