Introducing The Nigerian Music Digital Archive
The Nigerian Music Digital Archive is a digital documentation and preservation project dedicated to the history, evolution, and cultural impact of Nigerian music.
Nigeria’s music heritage spans generations, regions, and global movements — from palm-wine and Highlife to Afrobeat, reggae, pop, Juju, Fuji and contemporary Afrobeats. Yet much of this history remains scattered across fading physical media, incomplete online records, and undocumented oral memory.
The Archive exists to preserve these histories, document them accurately, and provide cultural context for how Nigerian music has shaped identity, society, and global popular culture.
Hosted at nigerianmusicdigitalarchive.cloud, the platform is designed as a long-term digital resource for researchers, educators, journalists, students, and music enthusiasts seeking reliable, well-contextualised information on Nigerian music history.
The Nigerian Music Digital Archive operates as an independent documentation platform and also serves as a research companion to the Music In My Ears documentary and storytelling project on YouTube.
While Music In My Ears brings Nigerian music history to life through audio-visual narratives, the Archive preserves the facts, credits, timelines, and references that underpin those stories.
Nigerian music history is a collective memory.
Scholars, musicians, journalists, families of artistes, and informed members of the public are welcome to suggest corrections, provide additional context, or submit verified materials. All contributions are reviewed before publication to maintain accuracy and integrity.

Why the Archive Matters
Nigerian music is more than sound or entertainment. It is:
a record of social and political change
a reflection of migration and identity
a vehicle for protest, spirituality, and celebration
a bridge between generations at home and in the diaspora
Despite its global influence, many Nigerian artistes, producers, session musicians, record labels, and studios remain under-documented or misrepresented in mainstream digital spaces. The Nigerian Music Digital Archive addresses this gap by prioritising research-led documentation, historical accuracy, and cultural integrity.
Preservation, Not Ownership
The Nigerian Music Digital Archive does not claim ownership of music recordings, photographs, artworks, or other copyrighted materials featured on the platform. Content is presented strictly for educational, research, and historical purposes, with respect for copyright, attribution, and fair-use principles.
Rights holders may contact the Archive regarding credits, updates, or content concerns.
Editorial Approach
The Nigerian Music Digital Archive is guided by the following principles:
Accuracy over speed
Context over popularity
Documentation over opinion
This is not a news platform, promotional outlet, or gossip site. Content is added gradually and intentionally, with respect for the legacies of the individuals and movements documented.
Our Vision
The long-term vision of the Nigerian Music Digital Archive is to become a trusted digital reference for Nigerian music history — supporting education, research, cultural preservation, and inter-generational understanding.
Nigerian music deserves to be remembered accurately, told respectfully, and preserved intentionally
Our Mission
The mission of the Nigerian Music Digital Archive is to preserve, document, and contextualise Nigeria’s music heritage through accurate research, cultural storytelling, and responsible digital preservation, ensuring that the contributions of artistes and music practitioners are recorded for present and future generations..
