Early Life and Beginnings
Born in Surulere, Lagos, Wizkid grew up in a vibrant urban environment where music was always present. Like many Nigerian artists, his earliest exposure to music came through the church. As a teenager, he began experimenting with music alongside friends, forming a group known as Glorious Five.

In the mid-2000s Lagos music scene, recording a song was not easy for young artists. Most studios were owned by producers, and musicians had to pay for studio sessions themselves. A typical session could cost around ₦8,000, a significant amount for an aspiring artist.
As a result, many young musicians spent long hours around studios, waiting for opportunities to speak with producers, negotiate recording time, or simply gain access to the creative process. Wizkid became known for his persistence, patiently waiting and observing, determined to find a way into the system.
During this period, he was also associated with the entertainment outfit Laface, founded by Babatunde Oshinibosi (Tunde Laface). These early industry connections helped him gain exposure to producers and the broader music ecosystem in Lagos.
Breakthrough-EME Era
Wizkid’s breakthrough came when he met Banky W, founder of Empire Mates Entertainment (EME). Recognising his talent, Banky W signed him to the label, marking a turning point in his career.
In 2010, Wizkid released the single “Holla at Your Boy,” which quickly gained widespread attention across Nigeria. The song introduced him to a mainstream audience and established him as an emerging voice in Nigerian pop music.
Ojuelegba and Identity
In 2014, Wizkid released one of the most defining songs of his career, “Ojuelegba.” Named after the Lagos district where he grew up, the song reflected on his journey through hardship, perseverance, and eventual success.
Ojuelegba is a major transport hub in Surulere, known for its constant movement and energy. It represents the intersection of struggle and opportunity, where many young people pursue their ambitions under challenging conditions.
The area is also known for its contrasts. Nearby Ayilara Street was once associated with nightlife and red-light activity, yet from that same environment emerged Oluchi Onweagba, who went on to become an internationally recognised model. This duality captures the essence of Ojuelegba and mirrors Wizkid’s own journey.
Global Breakthrough
Wizkid’s international breakthrough came through his collaboration with Canadian artist Drake on the global hit “One Dance.” The song introduced Afrobeats to a wider global audience and marked a significant moment in the international recognition of Nigerian music.
This collaboration positioned Wizkid as one of the leading figures in the global expansion of Afrobeats.
Sounds from the Other Side
Following the success of “One Dance,” Wizkid entered a new phase in his career, characterised by experimentation and global collaboration. In 2017, he released the album “Sounds from the Other Side.”
This project blended Afrobeats with elements of Caribbean, R&B, and pop music, featuring a range of international artists and producers. Tracks such as “Closer,” featuring Drake, reflected this shift toward a more globally oriented sound.
Although the album received mixed reactions within Nigeria, it played an important role in expanding Wizkid’s international presence and positioning him within the global music industry. It served as a bridge between his Nigerian roots and his global ambitions.
Made in Lagos and Global Afrobeats
Wizkid continued to build on this momentum with the release of “Made in Lagos” in 2020. The album further refined his sound and emphasised mood, rhythm, and international appeal.
One of its standout tracks, “Essence,” featuring Tems, became one of the most successful Afrobeats songs ever recorded. The song gained global airplay, chart success, and introduced a new generation of listeners to Nigerian music.
